Here are some quick facts about bees/beekeeping:

  • Beekeepers use smoke to calm bees whilst collecting honey or relocating a hive
  • Bees make honey to feed their young, as well as having something to eat during winter
  • Bees are often referred to as ‘pollinators.’ This is because they help plants live and reproduce by transferring pollen between different species of flowering plants.
  • Bees carry pollen on their legs and body from one flower to another, which helps to create ‘genetic variety.’

Different Bee Types

Below are the different types of bees:

  • Bumblebees—bumblebees typically nest in the ground but can also be found above ground in places like patios and decks. Sometimes they build nests in attics or under roof beams.
  • Carpenter bees—carpenter bees are solitary bees that build nests just for themselves. They are able to drill through wood, hence the name. Carpenter bees stingers are not barbed, so they can sting multiple times.
  • Honeybees—living in larger families, honeybees are the only social insect whose colony can survive for many years. This is because they huddle together and eat honey to stay alive during the winter months.
  • Africanised ‘killer’ bees—these bees bear a resemblance to regular honeybees; however, they have different wing measurements. Africanised bees live in South America, as well as the Western and Southern United States.
